Introduction to Color Theory

This course is an introduction to color theory and application for teens interested in pursuing art or design in college or perhaps as a career. Students will gain an understanding of the elements of color through acrylic painting exercises, presentations, discussions, and a field trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. This course will include color mixing and identification; fundamental and experimental applications; color harmonies and schemes; as well as the emotional impact and illusionistic qualities of color. As a result of this class, students will learn how to effectively use color to create a bold impact and will have an opportunity to create additional artworks for their portfolios. / Open to students ages 15–18. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions. / View complete policies here.

Prerequisite: Previous drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; 9 x 12" or larger gessoed canvas pad; acrylic paint brushes (round, filbert, bright or flat brushes); a set of basic acrylic paints (black, white, red, yellow and blue); a white plastic paint palette. A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
