Graphic design is a marriage of formal aesthetics and communication. This class focuses on design principles, clear expression of intent, and methodology, allowing students to see projects through from conception to fruition. Putting into practice the concepts and principles of design, students will ideate, research, sketch, develop, and create. Projects, exercises, discussions, lectures, and critique will be used to develop students' visual literacy and professional knowledge. Basic rules of typography, composition, and branding will be explored.

Through historical analysis and exposure to current examples and contemporary practices, students will also emerge with a better understanding of graphic design from a theoretical, historical, and practical standpoint. / Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / Open to students ages 18 and above. / View complete policies.

Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. Working knowledge of Mac OS X. Intermediate experience with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator are required.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook. USB drive or cloud storage option for saving work. Digital SLR camera recommended, smartphones okay.
