Introduction to Graphic Design (Online)

Graphic design is a marriage of formal aesthetics and communication. Exploring the foundational principles of design, this class examines the fundamental concepts, skills, and knowledge needed in the field of graphic design. Introductory concepts of branding, practical design skills, typography, design history, and composition will be the primary focus. Putting into practice these concepts and principles of design, students will ideate, research, sketch, develop, and create—largely away from the computer. With a focus on clear expression of intent and methodology, participation as both a creator and critical thinker is essential. Projects, exercises, discussions, lectures, and critiques will be used to develop students' visual literacy and professional knowledge.

Through historical analysis and exposure to current examples and contemporary practices, students will also emerge with a better understanding of graphic design from a theoretical, historical, and practical standpoint. / Each student will have access throughout the class to Adobe Creative Cloud software. / Open to students ages 16 and above. View complete policies.

This online course will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous learning. Students will meet together online for synchronous class meetings on Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. (CT) via Google Meet. Class meetings will include lectures, demonstrations, group discussions, critiques, and in-class exercises. Asynchronous activities will include video instruction, one-on-one feedback meetings, and written feedback on submitted work from the instructor.
