Introduction to Illustration

This dynamic class will introduce students to illustration materials and techniques, conceptual approaches to image making, and will address practices relating to the business of illustration. Illustration is essential to the success of the editorial, advertising, publishing, and product packaging industries. The creative process will be discussed, from creating initial sketches to undergoing final illustration critiques. Assignments are designed to help students gain an understanding of where, when, and how illustration is used, and to develop the skills needed to create successful illustrations. Students will focus not only on making images and developing their own visual language through creative and conceptual approaches but also on analyzing imagery.

This class will include demonstrations of using art materials (ranging from gouache, pen and ink, to watercolor) along with information on topics related to working as a professional illustrator. The instructor will discuss topics including: business practices; creating an illustration portfolio; self-promotion and networking; working with art directors; and negotiating contracts. A variety of homework assignments will support in-class discussions. / Materials fee of $10 in addition to course tuition. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.
