Title:
Introduction to Oil Painting (Beginning Painting) (Online)
Instructor:
Price:
$410.00

This introductory class is tailored to those who have never painted or have not used oil paints before and who are ready to take the plunge. Using oil paint, students will learn basic techniques of this expansive medium. The fundamental elements of color, color theory, design, form, and content will be explored through studio work, demonstrations, and slide lectures. This is a welcoming and engaging class; be ready to paint on the first night! / Open to students ages 18 and above. View complete policies.

This online course will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous. Students will meet together online for synchronous class meetings every other week via Zoom. The alternating weeks will be one-on-one online meetings with the Instructor. Course activities will include group discussions, critique, and individualized guidance and feedback. Asynchronous activities will include viewing pre-recorded videos created by the instructor outside of class time.

Prerequisites: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. Students will need a space big enough to set up (including an easel and painting table) with access to a window that can be opened for ventilation.

Required hardware: A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

Required supplies for the first class: Two sheets of 22 x 30" Arches cover white paper; one 18 x 24" drawing board (or larger); one 32 oz. container of acrylic gesso; gesso brush; roll of white artist's tape; one 32 oz. container of Gamsol odorless mineral spirits; 12 x 16" pad of disposable palette paper; cloth rags; one 37ml oil paint tube each of Phthalo green and Alizarin crimson; two metal palette knives in varying shapes and sizes. Students should expect to spend about $200 on supplies.

When using oil paints, be sure your space is adequately ventilated - a couple of open windows is sufficient. If proper ventilation is not possible, the instructor suggests using acrylic paint and will address the differences in the demo videos.
