Introduction to Painting

This class is designed as a fun and exciting path to lead younger artists toward a better understanding of the basic concepts, techniques, and materials used in contemporary painting. Formal elements such as composition, measuring, and color theory will be introduced. In addition to studio work, students will be exposed to various painting styles and histories through lectures and a visit to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The class will be introduced to terms commonly used to discuss art, and will learn the value of group critique. This class will use water-based paint. / Materials fee of $5 in addition to class tuition. / Open to students ages 12–15. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions. / View complete policies here.

Prerequisite: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; 2 large sheets Arches and/or BKF Rives paper; 2B graphite pencil; water cup; paper palettes; palette knife; acrylic paint brushes (various sizes, round and flat); Acrylic Paint Colors: Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Vermilion Green, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Titanium White. A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting. / Students should anticipate an additional cost of roughly $75-100 in total for materials (not included in tuition).

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
