Introduction to Painting (On Campus)

This class is designed as a fun and exciting path to lead younger artists toward a better understanding of the basic concepts, techniques, and materials used in contemporary painting. Formal elements such as composition, measuring, and color theory are introduced. In addition to independent studio work, students will be introduced to various painting styles, art history, terms commonly used to discuss art and learn the value of group critiques. This class uses water-based acrylic paint. / Open to students ages 12–15. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions. / View complete policies. Prerequisites: Previous drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required.

Required supplies for the first class: Pen or pencil; sketchbook; two large sheets Arches and/or BKF Rives paper; 2B graphite pencil; flat head paint brushes (various sized, natural or synthetic bristles); paper palettes pad; cup or jar for water ; acrylic paints in the following colors: Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Titanium White (or similar colors). Supplies will cost approximately $100.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
