In this introductory-level course, explore how typography is used to communicate effectively within the field of graphic design. While building a basic vocabulary of terms and processes, complete exercises covering topics ranging from formal usage to typography as art. Class periods will include studio time, discussions, and critiques appropriate to the projects throughout the course.

The primary focus of the course will be increasing knowledge of how to work with typography relating to communication, type pairing, hierarchy, and layout. The class will also cover historical references and cultural context of typography through lectures, videos, readings, and discussions.

Introduction to Typography is open to students pursuing graphic design, professionals looking to fine-tune their skills, or hobbyists with a passion for type. / Each student will have access throughout the class to a lab workstation equipped with the latest software. / No class July 4. / Materials fee of $5 in addition to course tuition. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.

Prerequisite: Working knowledge of Mac OS X. Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator are helpful but not required.

What to Bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; USB drive or cloud storage option for saving work.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
