Introduction to Watercolor (On Campus)

Many painting experts believe that learning the techniques of watercolor as a foundation to painting can give students a much deeper understanding when working with opaque oil or acrylic paints. This high school level watercolor class is specifically tailored to meet the interests of teen artists, with the mindset that watercolor can be both an extension of drawing and a foundation for other painting mediums. Students learn essential skills needed to gain a full understanding of watercolor painting, including control, familiarity, and experimentation with the medium. Students learn traditional and non-traditional approaches to watercolor painting, including how to execute washes and blends and using household materials to create texture. Traditional techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry brush are demonstrated, as well as experimental techniques such as salting; splattering; and stenciling. Class time is spent on demonstrations, lecture, studio time, and critique. / Open to students ages 15–18. MCAD strictly adheres to these age guidelines and is unable to allow exceptions. / View complete policies.
