Mining for Your Creative DNA

Some people are inspired by the malleability of charcoal on smooth paper, while others may gravitate towards the bold use of the color red. One artist may be intrigued by the motion of a bird in flight, while another marvels at the way light shifts and changes character throughout the day. When the work of a truly remarkable artist is recognized, their signature becomes visible, even when not literally present. What is recognized in such instances is the artist’s “Creative DNA”- a term coined by American dancer and choreographer Twyla Tharp, in her book The Creative Habit. This course is loosely based on some of the ideas presented in Tharp’s primer on “how to live a successful creative life.” Through discussions, readings, writing exercises, and studio practice and critiques, students in this course will begin to find their muses, name their intentions, and strengthen their unique creative voice. In our quest for genuine individual expression, we will cast an initial wide net of possibility in our studio practice, as we engage in drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking. In conjunction with the readings and responsive writing exercises, each artist will assess their catch, throw back what does not speak to them, and begin to closely explore those ideas, subject matter and approaches which move them the most.
