Natural History Drawing at the Bell Museum

The celebrated dioramas, skeletons, and other distinctive features of the natural history exhibits at the Bell-Museum serve as the setting for an intensive drawing course. Students will learn about the gifted artists who created the world-class dioramas as they sketch subjects in their “natural” environments. Students will have the opportunity to develop a deep connection to their chosen subject matter.

This drawing experience, of drawing animals, is very different emotionally from working with traditional still-life in the studio!

Students will learn the fundamental elements of art and drawing (line, shape, form, space, value, and texture) through an emphasis on direct observation. This class will push students’ drawing skills -at all levels- forward. In addition, students will use drawing as a thinking tool and means to develop proposals and make ideas visual. / Materials fee of $40 in addition to course tuition. / Open to students ages 16 and above. / View complete policies.

What to bring: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook. Individual drawing papers, drawing board (24 x 38”), portable easels if desired, charcoal pencils (hard, medium, soft), graphite pencils and sticks (2B, 4B, 6B, 2H), compressed charcoal (hard, soft), chamois, 1” or ½” masking tape, pencil sharpener, kneaded eraser, eraser pencil, workable fixative spray, large portfolio.
