Philosophy is based on a desire to understand history, the world around us, and the human condition. By studying these ideas, students can begin to develop contemporary questions about their world and interests. This class examines the history of philosophy and current philosophies, both Western and non-Western. Students propose philosophical and historical questions to better understand themselves and the arts in the twenty-first century. Class sessions are a mix of lecture and discussion. This course fills a Histories, Places and Philosophies requirement for Humanities and Sciences. / Open to students ages 18 and above. / View complete policies here.

How does an online course work at MCAD?
Most online courses are primarily or fully asynchronous, meaning that there are no set class meeting times. Some classes do include a weekly or bi-weekly synchronous meeting. Instead, courses are project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week, and students can choose a time and place that works best for them to complete the work. Course activities may include readings; video demonstrations and tutorials; online discussions; projects; and critiques. The workload of a 1 credit course is roughly 8-10 hours per week, whether the course is being taken for credit or noncredit.
