Portraiture in Painting: Beyond the Traditional

This class will teach students to go beyond the traditional approach to portrait painting that would tend toward an empathetic and faithful rendering of the sitter's likeness, toward something bolder and more exploratory. Students will learn to bend and stretch the rules of portrait painting in order to dig deeper in hopes of arriving at finished works that are richer and more profound.

In this class the instructor will guide students to a greater level of depth and understanding of their painting practice by viewing and discussing the work of abstract portrait painters past and present. This class will focus on the use of oil paints. / Materials fee of $5 in addition to course tuition. / Open to students ages 18 and above. / View complete policies.
