Pre-College Studio Intensive: Comic Art (Hybrid)

In this one-week studio intensive, participants are taught the necessary skills to develop short form comics. The class covers storytelling, character and environment development, penciling, inking, and production. The final goal will be a mini-comic anthology of the student’s work. / Students will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the class. / Open to students ages 15–18. This course is a combination of online and in-person sessions. Students enrolled in this course need daily transportation to the MCAD campus. Students meet together online each morning for a class session from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for demonstrations, lectures, class activities and group discussions. These virtual meetings will be held via Google Meet or Zoom. After a one-hour lunch break, students will meet on campus each afternoon from 1-4 p.m. for studio time to work on projects, receive individual feedback from the instructor and participate in group critiques. 

Prerequisites: Previous drawing experience helpful, but not required. Experience with Adobe Photoshop is helpful, but not required.

Required software: Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD).

Required hardware: Computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

Required supplies for the first class: white-out pen; Post-its pad; pad Canson XL Bristol 9” x 12”; inexpensive synthetic round brush between 0 – 2 size; inexpensive black india ink; non-photo blue pencil; regular pencil – mechanical or 2H regular; pencil sharpener if using a regular pencil; tri-tip eraser; clear-plastic 12 inch Linex T-square. Supplies will cost approximately $40-$50.
