This class focuses on the major of painting. Students work both online and in MCAD's professional and expansive painting classroom to hone their skills and define their creative vision. Using traditional painting media, teens get the chance to explore the wide range of techniques used by fine artists today. Participants work from observation to add advanced work to their portfolios. This course is a combination of online and in-person sessions. Students enrolled in this course need daily transportation to the MCAD campus. Students meet together online each morning for a class session from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for demonstrations, lectures, class activities and group discussions. These virtual meetings will be held via Google Meet or Zoom. After a one-hour lunch break, students will meet on campus each afternoon from 1-4 p.m. for studio time to work on projects, receive individual feedback from the instructor and participate in group critiques. 

Prerequisites: Previous drawing and painting experience helpful, but not required.

Required hardware: A computer or tablet with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work. 

Required supplies for the first day: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; headphones or earbuds; gel medium glossy (small bottle); acrylic gel retarder (small bottle); palette knife; palette paper (at least 11” x 14"); canvas pad (at least 9” x 12"); acrylic paint brushes (sizes 4 round, 6 flat, 1 round); roll of white artists tape; 3 sheets of large index paper or bristol board, etc. (some kind of paper that could handle getting paint on it); large cup for water; soft graphite pencil or cine charcoal. Minimum for paint: Golden Heavy Body Artist Acrylic Set; Class Theory Color Mixing Set; 2 oz tubes for paint which includes the colors (alizarin crimson hue, cadmium yellow light, cadmium red light, Indian yellow hue, Prussian blue hue, titanium white, ultramarine blue, and viridian green); additional colors that would be useful include (yellow ochre, cobalt blue, phthalo green, cerulean blue, cadmium red). Supplies will cost approximately $120.

What to wear: Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.
