Typography Intensive (Online)

This class is geared towards students pursuing graphic design, professionals looking to fine-tune their skills, or hobbyists with a passion for type. In this course, students will explore how typography is used to communicate effectively within the field of graphic design. While building a basic vocabulary of terms and processes, students will exercise different topics ranging from formal usage to typography as art.

The primary focus of the course will be creating individual projects through both experimental, analog materials and computer-based typesetting. The class will also cover historical context and contemporary usage of typography through lectures, videos, and discussions. / Each student will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the class. / Open to students ages 18 and above. This online course will be a combination of synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous class meetings on Mondays from 6:30 pm-8 pm (CST) via Google Meet for demonstrations, discussions, and critiques. 30 minutes office hours will follow for questions and one-on-one meetings with the Instructor. Asynchronous activities will include pre-recorded videos (YouTube and Vimeo) up to 60 minutes a week. Casual group critiques will be an integral part of the class to assist with feedback and evaluation of student work. 

Prerequisites: Experience with Adobe InDesign and Illustrator are helpful but not required.

Required software: Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD).

Required hardware: Computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

Required supplies for the first class: Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook.

If the minimum enrollment is not met by the deadline above, the class will be canceled on this date. Registration will remain open after this date if the minimum enrollment has been met.
