Mutual Aid @ MCAD is a food and supply distribution site serving the Whittier neighborhood, orchestrated thanks to the People’s Library.

The People's Library is a collective that began as a student group and continues to work as a collective of MCAD alumni and students. The group responded to a Whittier community need for more food assistance in the aftermath of the George Floyd murder. The college is using the south end of the main building, including the student-run Gallery 148 and some of the student studios, to house the distribution site through August 1. There is an urgent need for more resources.

How many families/individuals are the food site serving?
The site serves between 100-140 families per distribution day. This includes on-site pick-up as well as deliveries.

How monetary donations will be used:
While the distribution site has relied on donations, two supplementary van trips per week to replenish and restock items will help the site build its capacity to maintain a more stable inventory and ensure that more families get their specific needs met. Donations have slowed significantly, and the site has been running out of items or been running low on essential supplies each day. In addition, donations will help fund Tuesday and Thursday community meals that are coordinated with farmer's markets and other community partners. Menus have included fried rice, empanadas, pasta salad, and vegan/BBQ pork pulled sandwiches along with sides and drinks.

How to donate safely at the Mutual Aid @ MCAD distribution site:
If you prefer to donate items from the list, the site is taking precautions due to COVID-19 so that you may donate safely. Please load items in your trunk or back seat and bring your car to the MCAD entrance on Stevens near the 3D shop. There will be a white tent and 2-3 volunteers to unload goods. Volunteers are wearing masks and gloves. You will be greeted and asked to stay in your car. You will be asked where the donations are in your car and if there are any items that should be left. You may find it easier to take out any personal items beforehand. You will be thanked and then directed to exit through the alley on South 26th Street.
