"When I saw it on the wall it was calling me. I think I have a place for them in my living room, if not I'll be creative!"

For three days each November, thousands of works are hung on every inch of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design's walls and put up for sale. On the sale's opening night, we asked attendees what they bought and why.

Left: "The paintings are gorgeous, the brushstrokes are super soft and beautiful." Right: "This piece seemed like a lot of fun for me. I like the colors and I like that it's square."

"We were actually just talking about how it reminded us about some lichen that he saw at Glacier National Park. The colors are so vibrant! We already know where we are going to hang it—we've had an empty spot in our bedroom for a while now, and we came here looking for a piece just for it.

"I chose this piece because I live in the city and I love to bike. I also really enjoy the color scheme."

"I love the colors, I love the collage element, I love how thick the pieces are, and I love the artist's work! I actually already have two of his pieces in my home already."

Do you know where you're going to put this piece?
"No I don't, I have artwork from floor to ceiling in my home!"

“We love to support MCAD artists. We currently have no wall space at home because it's covered with MCAD art.”

"I love the colors. I like her expression. It makes me wonder what she's thinking about. The brush strokes are so broad and dramatic, yet she's really contemplative, so it's a nice contrast."

"We came here with getting art for our art wall at home in mind, this seemed like it would be a nice fit."

"We have a spot in our library that we need to fill a space for. We've looked at many paintings that have this same color scheme, and I saw this and was thinking of getting it for my husband. I just love contemporary art and I love the colors, plus this little hint of brown in it."

"I like the abstract part of this piece. The weird floaty things stuck out to me—I'm into weird stuff like this. I also like the landscape and the contrasting colors."

"I believe in surrounding your life with beauty. I purchased something here at the sale five years ago and it's still above my fireplace and it still makes my place feel really warm."

"I bought a painting from Evan last year, too. I love the evolution of his style of painting, it's much different from last year. I love it and I was super excited to see his new work this year."

"I love the reflectiveness, and he has such a process in his work that it ends up being more than just a regular photograph."

Do you have a place in mind where you're going to put these two pieces?
"Yes, I have a lake home, and I came here looking for something different than what I already had. I admire his work and I think it's outstanding. And I love the frames."

"This piece is a gift for my daughter's father-in-law, and this other one is a piece for my home. I don't have a place in mind for it yet, but I really love it!"

This sale is always a great way for the community to support emerging artists. And during this year's sale, a group of artists in the Black Artist Student Union channeled some of that support to raise money for Hurricane Maria victims. 100% of the funds from purchases of the group's pins, postcards, and stickers went to the Hurricane Victims in Puerto Rico.
