Important Changes to Campus Support Areas

Dear MCAD Faculty, staff and students,

This includes important changes to support areas in light of the campus restrictions until the end of the Fall 2020 semester. Please read this message carefully.

Faculty who wish to access the 3D shop after the semester ends to prepare for spring semester should reach out to staff in the individual areas to make arrangements.

If you have any questions, please reach out to departments directly for further information. 


3D Shop

After Thanksgiving hours (for no contact service bureau support):

Nov 28–Dec 11

Mon–Thurs: 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.
Friday: 9:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. 
Saturday–Sunday: noon–5:00 

Starting Wednesday, November 25 the 3D shop will be closed for in-person work access and begin “service bureau”-type non-contact operations until further notice. Shop spaces will be unavailable for access including the woodshop, metal shop, spray booth, composite lab, sewing room, assembly and mold-making spaces, and cnc, machining, and digital fabrication labs.

The 3D shop staff will be on site in a limited capacity to facilitate non-contact services requested by students via email. These services include:

  • 3D printing, laser cutting via our online system located on our intranet page.
  • CNC operations from approved student files.
  • Custom cutting and machining of materials to support ongoing student projects. Pick up and drop off of materials and projects will be set up in the loading dock west of the shop.
  • Tools may be requested via email to the 3D shop account.  All approved tool requests will be placed in drop off bins located in the loading dock. All tools must be returned within 24 hours.
  • Shop staff will also be available for online consultation for faculty and students during class meetings to offer guidance on tools and processes available to them via portal access.
  • Poplar, steel sheets and rods will be available for purchase online with papercut.

Academic Services

Academic Services will be closed Wednesday, November 25–Friday, November 27 for Thanksgiving Break.

Beginning November 30 Academic Services will be open 8:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday–Thursday with reduced staff and closed Fridays. If you need assistance please email academic_services@mcad.edu or call 612.874.3748. 


Art Cellar

Starting Wednesday, November 25 the Art Cellar will be doing pick up orders only (no in store shopping). 

Please call ahead of time (612-874-3775). We will put your order together over the phone and set up pick up arrangements. We will be accepting either card payment or you can use your student/faculty/department account (no cash/check).

You may also email the Art Cellar (mcadartcellar@mcad.edu). If you decide to email in an order make sure to include a phone number so we can call for payment and pickup arrangements.  

Pick up instructions: 

  • If you are on campus we will set up a pick up time when you place your order. At the scheduled time you can swing by the store and knock on the door to pick up your order.
  • We can also run orders out to your car and either put them in your trunk for you or we can hand them off. Please remember to wear your mask.  
  • MCAD departments: you can either pick up at the store (knock when you get here) or if you will not be on campus between 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. we can put your order in your mailbox. 

Hours: 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday (we will be closed November 26 & 27 for Thanksgiving Break and December 24 through January 1st for Winter Break).

Help Desk and Technology

Help Desk

The MCAD Help Desk will maintain standard office availability through 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25.

Our office will be closed from Thursday, November 26 through Sunday, November 29.

We will re–open with the following changes being implemented on Monday, November 30:

  • The Help Desk will switch to a primary work-from-home support model. Staff will be on campus only as needed or by appointment.
  • We will maintain our standard work schedule of 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. Mon–Thurs and 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Fri through the end of the semester.
  • The Help Desk can solve most issues remotely using email, video chat, and other remote support tools. We’re still here, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of our resources at a distance!
  • Users needing assistance are encouraged to reach out to the Help Desk via email at helpdesk@mcad.edu (preferred) or telephone at 612-874-3666. 
  • On-campus help will be available through appointment only. Walk-ins will not be allowed, and additional restrictions will be placed on waiting in the Help Desk while work is being completed for scheduled help.
  • Hands-free drop-off and pick-up solutions or deliveries to waiting vehicles outside the main entrance can be arranged as needed or required. In fact, we recommend it!

ITS Office

Information Technology Services (ITS) provides operational management and security for MCAD's client, server, and network systems.  They will be available 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on call 24/7 for system outages and emergencies.  If you are in need of assistance, please email computer_support@mcad.edu.


Learning Center

Monday 11/23–Wednesday 11/25: Regular virtual hours 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
Thursday 11/26–Saturday 11/28: Closed
Sunday 11/29: Open regular virtual hours 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m.
Monday 11/30–Friday 12/11 Regular Virtual Hours

M–F: 10:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
Saturday: Closed
Sunday: 11/29: 4:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. 

The physical center is closed for the rest of the Fall 2020 semester and there are no in-person meetings until 2021.

Appointments with writing, studio and software peer tutors, along with undeclared student academic advising meetings, and success coaching around organization and time management meetings, can be made on the Learning Center Appointment page. Library

Open hours for this week will be Monday and Tuesday 8:30 a.m.–10:00 p.m.

Through Tuesday, November 24, you can come in and pick up materials that you want for the rest of the semester and Winter Break. 

Beginning Wednesday, November 25, we will be closed for in-person use, with the following remote services available to faculty, staff and students: 

  • Online research assistance: contact Allan directly akohl@mcad.edu or  library@mcad.edu 
  • Extended due date to February 1 for returning students
  • Interlibrary loan will continue at this time
  • Curbside pick-up for physical materials: contact library@mcad.edu 
  • Returns cart available at the Gallery entrance
  • Mail-in return option for non-returning students: contact library@mcad.edu 
  • Purchase requests for new materials will continue

MCAD Cafe

The MCAD Cafe will continue to serve meals from 11:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. on Friday from November 30 to December 11. Online ordering will be required ahead of time at mcad.edu/cafeorder for curbside pick up and for a contactless transaction. 


Media Center

Staffing Times and Order Pickups

  • The Media Center will be closing at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25 and will not re-open until Monday, November 30. Staff will be in the Media Center on November 30th, but circulations will resume on Wednesday, December 2 to give staff time to approve Personal Proposals and appointments to meet on campus can be determined. Earlier equipment pickups or drop offs may be available based on availability.
  • Staff will be working virtually from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, November 30–December 11, with limited on-campus availability by appointment or for equipment distribution. 
  • Starting December 14 staff will be working remotely from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and coming on to campus on a limited basis or by appointment. The Media Center and studio spaces will also be closed from December 24 to January 3.
  • There will continue to be no self-reservations and Personal Proposals are required for all equipment reservations.
    • Patron Portal will still be available as a guide to what equipment is available at the Media Center but will not be available to use for personal reservations.
  • As needed, MC staff will bring equipment out to you. When you arrive for your pickup appointment, call the Media Center at 612.874.3672 to let us know where you are parked on campus or what door to meet you at.

Media Center Studio Updates

  • The Darkrooms and Sound Studio will be closed until the start of spring semester. There will be limited appointment availability for the Black and Gray Studios that can be requested via Personal Proposal during the final weeks of the semester.

Printshop & Papermaking Studio

  • Students currently enrolled in PPB classes are strongly encouraged to come before we close Tuesday at midnight to prepare for the final two weeks of the semester. For example, this could include tearing paper, washing out, coating, exposing screens, mixing ink, etching a plate, printing a plate, cutting book board. 
  • Starting on Wednesday, November 25, the PPB Studios will be closed for in-person work access for all students. This includes the screenprinting, relief, lithography, papermaking studios (Wet and Dry), acid room, photogravure, book board cutter, guillotine, paper tearing areas.
  • Printshop/Paper Studio Staff will be available on site in a limited capacity, with reduced staffing,  Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m., November 30–December 11. Virtual meetings will be available and can be set up through Places and Spaces. We would like to help you with any questions you may have and are here for assistance. 
  • Certain Printshop equipment will be available to be checked out on Places and Spaces for one week starting on Monday, November 30 and December 7. Equipment is due one week later or a fine will be assessed. Equipment pick up is 2-5pm and check in is 9am-12pm. There will be a limited number of screen printing boards with hinge clamps and a squeegee, woodcut tool sets with a rubber mat and barren, book cradles, brayer with an ink knife and a piece of plexi will be lent out on a first come, first serve basis. 
  • Starting Monday, November 30, 30 minute appointments for ink mixing of limited colors will be available on Places and Spaces to students currently enrolled in PPB classes. Students will need to provide their own ink containers and limit their time to only mixing ink. 
  • Students are encouraged to clean out their lockers and flat files, and pick up their screens, before closing at midnight on Tuesday, November 24. Students enrolled in Spring 2021 classes, please put a spring tag and tape on their locker and flat file and we will save the contents. Tape and tags are inside the Printshop as you walk in. 
  • If you are not enrolled in a Spring 2021 class, students can contact printmakingstudio@mcad.edu to make an appointment to pick up your items. If any contents in lockers or flat files are not picked up before spring semester classes begin, contents will be recycled. 
  • The Printshop and Paper Studio will be closed after December 11 until the start of spring semester. If students have already left town, and need assistance, please email printmakingstudio@mcad.edu or call 612-874-3643. 

Service Bureau

The Service Bureau will maintain current hours and services through the end of the semester, but with no contact.

Hours:

Mon–Thurs 9:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m.
Fri 9:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
Sat–Sun 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m. 

  • All orders to be placed via email where possible.
  • Brief, limited in-person appointments taken if needed.
  • Students can still make their own Epson prints in the DPL as needed.

Regular hours end Friday, December 11 at 8:00 p.m.

Student Counseling

Student counseling is not available during the Thanksgiving break, but will resume Monday, November 30, 2020. If you need assistance over the break, please review and access the resources available on the Student Counseling and Wellness Intranet page.
