Joseph Gagnepain beginning an ice sculpture

Joseph Gagnepain ’97 created an ice sculpture over the weekend at the Peg Bond Center in Batavia, Chicago as part of a two-day ice sculpture event hosted by the Batavia MainStreet group.

While cold temperatures have kept many indoors over the past week, Gagnepain told the Chicago Tribune that this is right up his alley. “I love being outdoors when it’s cold and this is really my element,” he said. “I like being active and doing ice carving. I find it to be meditative.”

Gagnepain said he has been carving ice “the past 13 years” and estimates having made “at least 70 items overall” during that time.
