Emily C. Johnson ’02 has been awarded second place in InStore Mag's Coolest Jewelry Stores 2017 competition.

Shortly after she graduated from MCAD, busy creating window displays for Anthropologie, Johnson asked herself the question, “what would I do if I didn't have to work?”

Making jewelry immediately came to mind. Johnson's first experience with jewelry was making friendship bracelets in fifth grade. As she got older, she moved on to wirework and bead-weaving. She went back to school for metalsmithing and took a position with a high-end jeweler to learn the industry and eventually start her own business.

EC Design opened in 2008 as mainly a wholesale operation, selling her custom work to stores and galleries. Now, she has a storefront with regular hours and a long list of clientele seeking custom pieces from her. The shop is located in the Northrup King Building, a former-warehouse-turned-artist-studios. She has guest artists in the shop every month and the walls of the store are filled with her personal collection of work by local artists.
