This course approaches the problem of the blank canvas, exploring several automatic and experimental techniques at the disposal of the painter. Learn the creative methods employed by 20th Century Dada/Surrealist painter Max Ernst as a starting point on how to generate imagery to form compositions through automatic processes such as frottage, grattage, drip painting and decalcomania. Through this way of manipulating the canvas, the artist is then freed to think creatively as to how to “resolve” the composition, balancing the randomness of the automatic process with self-invented, novel considerations. To this end, the fundamentals of good composition are also introduced and discussed. / No class June 19. Open to students ages 18 and above.
