2023 Merit Scholarship Recipient: Chase Schulte

Describe the work you submitted for merits.

I submitted 2 brand identities, a personal diptych, and 4 publications. 

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I spent a lot of my teen years traveling to Minneapolis with my mom and felt comfortable moving here for college. I've really enjoyed meeting new people through MCAD while staying in touch with people back home is Des Moines. The friends, mentors, and connections I've found here at MCAD will continue to exist even when I'm no longer a student!

What are your plans for your senior year? And beyond?

For my last year at MCAD, I'm hoping to make more conceptual design work by applying my love for design and type in fine art courses. I plan to continue using design as an outlet to connect with myself and the community I have around me!

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

My favorite thing about college so far has been the ability to learn more about who I am as an independent adult. Moving away from home and allowing myself to learn and experience new things and meet new people has been an endless supply of joy and inspiration.

Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!

My favorite thing I've made this semester has to be my i miss diptych. I really struggle with feeling excited to make impersonal design work and took the time with this project to allow myself to sit down, write, and tediously color each letter in. It was a nice chance to slow down and untangle a few of the thoughts in my brain while also creating something heartfelt I knew others would resonate with. I love typography and design in fine art and I love when pieces tell me exactly what to think and feel, I think that can be just as impactful as asking the viewer to interpret something more vague. 

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment? 

Fully obsessed right now with the returning warmth of the sun, power naps, and the lowercase looptail 'g' :)
