2023 Merit Scholarship Recipient: Roman Zych

Describe the work you submitted for merits.

Here are the two films I submitted:

• Starcade 
  Arcades haven’t been profitable in decades. So why is Starcade opening now when every financial force is against them?  
• Truth, Justice, And the American Way?
  Fans of Superman have noticed there are more evil versions of the character than ever before. In Truth, Justice, And the American Way? I break down the cultural shift that’s responsible for these cynical adaptations.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I came to MCAD to learn about filmmaking, animation, history, and entrepreneurship. Plus, MCAD emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and is located in a city with a thriving arts scene and film community.

What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make?

I’m excited to learn about and incorporate AI tools into my filmmaking. Upcoming projects include documentaries on local businesses along with investigating the history and misuse of lobotomies in this country. 

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

Meeting talented people and being able to use the studio spaces has been a privilege. The chicken sandwiches at the cafe and playing super smash bros on the projector are also great :)

What inspires you? 

I’m inspired by the intersection between art and technology.

Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!

I directed and produced a mini documentary about a local arcade, Starcade. Arcades haven’t been profitable in decades and I was curious about why they are coming back. I interviewed one of the owners along with several of the patrons.

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment? 

Metroid, The Last Of Us, AI tools, and Studio Ghibli.
