June 17, 2023 Image They/Them Sophomore, Undecided Foundation Studies Merit Scholarship, $2,000 Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Describe the work you submitted for merits. I submitted various works from my foundations classes. It covered a range of different types of media, including both traditional and digital illustration, videos, audio, and sculpture. Why did you decide to come to MCAD? I wanted to experience the work of other artists. People are influenced by other people in every walk of life, and that is especially true for artists. I was encouraged by my high school teacher who was a former student of MCAD, as she said that MCAD was an environment that fostered communication between artists. What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make? Currently, I am working on a comic that I suddenly got inspiration for over Spring Break. The outline is very long, and I expect the comic to be even longer. However, I am excited by the prospect of watching myself grow and change over the course of working on this story. To me, growth is the most important variable to look for in a work of art. Favorite thing about college life (so far)? I like the amount of independence that college (and adult life) gives me! I quite enjoy being able to go to the surrounding area around campus (and other places) by myself. It makes me appreciate being around others more. What inspires you? Music. I often imagine stories in my head when I listen to music to relax. I find it amazing how music is one of the first things humans make. Songs often inspire the color palettes of my drawings. Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it! My favorite piece is one I've made of my own character. The colors were very fun to think of, and I appreciate how warm and easy on the eyes they are. Anything you're obsessed with at the moment? My cats named Ai-Chan and Kiana. I want to pet them all of the time. Explore more about Tiara Penna
