Benjamin Merritt

Benjamin Merritt ’19 is currently featured in solo exhibition A Feather Plucked From Its Bird at Dreamsong.

Merritt's new artist book A Feather Plucked from its Bird is a variable collection of unbound handmade prints produced by the artist at Highpoint Center for Printmaking through multiple printmaking processes including etching, monoprint, drypoint, aquatint, soft ground, and paper stencil. The poems in the collection express the material conditions of illness—how it affects personal relationships, the costs of medicine, chronic pain and its absence, and the tension between being cared for and giving care. This body of work is an affirmation of sick embodiment. Echoing Merritt’s experience of constantly adapting to remain safe in an ableist society, each edition contains subtle deviations in their marks and gestures.

Meritt is also going to be featured in a live conversation with several other exhibiting artists hosted by the International Print Center New York (IPCNY).

Join a live conversation with exhibiting artists Meritt, Shannon Finnegan, and Terry Schubach-Gordon, as they discuss their experiences as artists working with disabilities or chronic illnesses and topics such as the body, public space, community and process. This is the final online Artist Conversations IPCNY is hosting during the winter 2022 season of New Prints. This Zoom webinar is free and open to the public. Live captioning will be available. The event will also be recorded and made available online.
