Thesis 2024 / Shafrin Islam

Image of Shafrin's thesis work. A corner of a room with walls displaying the projected text 'LOST IN THE KALEIDOSCOPE OF SENSATION' on one side and 'AS I WATCH THE WORLD WHIRL PAST ME' on the other. The projection casts ripples of light that resemble water over the walls and the shadow of a plant."

Where time stands still serves as a deeply personal exploration of liminal spaces, akin to the transition between waking and dreaming states.

Within this sanctuary, I delve into the intricacies of my own consciousness, crafting my mythologies by focusing on a specific time in my life when I felt inundated by experiences from all directions. This personal mythological world brings together my interdisciplinary practice of illustration, watercolor painting, experimental animation, projection, installation, poetry, and sound design.

Divided into three distinct sections, the installation guides visitors through an introspective journey. Letters to Ghosts, the initial space encountered, envelops viewers in a forest of chiffon fabric adorned with hand-written poems, abstract watercolor paintings, and found natural objects- a homage to past selves lingering in liminality. Transitioning from this space is the intimate confines of the Stardust Sails inside the black room. Here, my poetry and rhythmic compositions fill the air, illuminated solely by a mysterious box emitting otherworldly light and animated projections synchronized with the audio. Interacting with the box unravels a whimsical sequential tale of a journey inside a strange forest. Outside the blackroom is the Memory glyphs in dreamscapes which is the last section in the corner. Handwritten words flow out from the black room on the floor, spaced out with green plants and projections of animations on the wall, with poems tying all three of the project spaces together.

As someone with synesthesia, capable of visualizing shapes and colors in music, I aim  to tangibly represent the complexities of emotions I had been experiencing using abstract patterns. This process is  a means of reclaiming emotions I once deemed too abstract to articulate through conventional communication methods.

This shift in focus led my research from digital animation practices towards pre-cinema animation and experimental processes, where embracing spontaneity and experimentation have become integral to understanding myself. Through this work, I am ultimately challenging my boundaries within illustration and moving-image-based work.

In the initial stages of the MFA program, I delved into researching geo-mythological stories and folktales, aiming to deepen my connection to the land of my upbringing in Bangladesh and reconcile past mythologies with the present. However, as the program progressed, I embarked on a transformative journey seeking to reconcile my own past with the present. Embracing acceptance, resilience, and a reconnection with the inner child, I navigate the ever-changing landscape of my artistic practice while exploring the theme of time and its intricate interplay with personal growth and creative expression.
