Gum printing is a 19th-century photographic printing process capable of rendering painterly images from negatives and objects. Course descriptionLearn how to use this unique and experimental process to make painterly photographs and solargrams. Gum printing is also known as gum bichromate and is an antique photo process that uses watercolor pigment along with gum arabic and potassium dichromate to create an image. Similar in process to cyanotypes, objects like botanical specimens, drawings and writing on tracing paper, or enlarged negatives can be used to make images. Hand mix and apply the colors in unique ways, arrange the composition on a piece of glass, and use the sun to create the photographs.This class will be of interest to both photographers looking to broaden their printing options, and print based artists looking to add a photographic element to their work. / Standard safety protocols regarding any chemicals will be followed. / Materials fee of $29 included in tuition.Open to students ages 18 and above.
