Art Educator Workshop: Ethics and Intentionality in AI Image Creation (online)

Learn about the variety of continually developing tools that are available for AI image generation. As AI tools become more ubiquitous, it can be beneficial for teachers to keep up on the technology to guide students towards it's responsible use.

Course description

Critically engage with different AI techniques that allow for creative and stylistic control while also incorporating the novel results inherent to generative AI systems. Learn how to use AI image generation tools while also critically examining some of the ethical questions that their use raises. Discuss with other arts educators around the mechanics and policies of these tools and how they impact past and current artists.

The workshop includes a combination of lecture, demonstrations, exercises and activities to gain a better understanding of AI image generation and its implications for the field of art. / Graduate credit is available.

Prerequisites

Previous experience with Adobe Creative Cloud helpful, but not required. Students should be comfortable working with layers, making selections, and different image file formats (ie. PSD vs JPG/PNG).

Class meeting details

This online course is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Students meet together online for synchronous class meetings on Mondays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. CST, using Google Meet for demonstrations, discussions, exercises, critique and opportunities for students to ask questions and share resources. Asynchronous activities may include readings, video demonstrations and tutorials, online discussions, projects, and critiques. Instructor will have office hours throughout the course.

Required materials

Supplies
Students should anticipate purchasing $10-20 of AI web services. Details about supplies will be discussed on the first day of class.

Hardware
A computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet access, a camera, and microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

Apple Laptop/Desktop or iPad, with M1 or better processor to generate AI images.

Class savings

Art Educator Workshops are not eligible for the early or multiple class registration discounts.

This class does not qualify for the $25 tuition waiver or the alumni discounts.
