Botanical Watercolor I (in person)

Using flowers and plants as subject matter, create watercolor paintings that are vibrant, delicate, and luminous.

Course description

Work directly from observation at the University of Minnesota’s College of Biological Sciences Conservatory as well as from photographs and the imagination to create translucent works using this versatile medium. Learn traditional and non-traditional approaches to watercolor painting, including how to layer colors, how to describe floral details, and execute washes and blends. Traditional techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry brush are taught through demonstration. Students are also welcome to try experimental techniques all while spending time in an indoor tropical, magical, visual, and fragrant biosphere. Class time is spent on demonstrations, lectures, work time, and critiques. / Material fee of $12 and facility fee of $46 included in course tuition.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing experience is helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies for first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • HB pencil
  • erasers
  • paper towels
  • container for water
  • masking tape
  • Xacto knife
  • watercolor paint brush(es) Number 4 round and or any other ones
  • watercolor paint tubes (red, blue, yellow, plus any other colors you can get)
  • watercolor pallet (the bigger the better, white plastic, like a big square one, not a little circle one)
  • watercolor paper (ideally sheets that are 22 x 30”) 140lb
  • ruler or straightedge watercolor
  • Art Masking Fluid (optional)

Students should expect to spend up to $100-$200 on supplies in addition to tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

Register on or before January 20 and save $25.
Register for more than one class at a time and receive $25 off each additional class (same-day registrations only).
