Collagraph Printmaking (in person)

Collagraphy is the process of creating and printing from a “collaged” printmaking plate. A variety of techniques and inexpensive materials can be used to produce complex, conceptual images.

Course description

Class topics include creating different types of printing plates - carving and manipulating matboard, printing from fabrics, construction with acrylic media, and creating values and textures. Explore printing with newly created plates as relief or intaglio images, printmaking inks and presses, mixing colors, creating layers, and printing an edition. / Facilities fee of $94 included in tuition. Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This class meets in person on MCAD’s campus. This class has limited access to the Printshop. Students do not have access to the Printshop outside of class hours. Please review the Printshop guidelines in advance.

It is imperative to attend the first class meeting. Important instruction and safety procedures are covered, that are required in order to successfully participate in the class.

Prerequisites

Students do not need to be able to draw well, but they should have enough manual dexterity to cut, glue, collage, mix inks, etc. People without use of both hands may need special assistance in doing this work.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook
  • Xacto knife with extra blades
  • Scissors
  • Disposable nitrile gloves (20 pairs)
  • Printmaking paper: 1 sheet of Stonehenge, BFK, Somerset Satin, or similar
  • Printmaking paper: 1 sheet of Kozo thick 25”x37” (or Thai Kozo, or similar)
  • 8 oz bottle of PVA and/or acrylic medium

Additional supplies need throughout the course

  • Other printmaking paper to be determined by students’ individual projects
  • Assortment of brushes for oil-based and water-based work
  • Matboard / cardboard scraps & pieces
  • Fabric scraps
  • Textured paper scraps

Students should expect to spend approximately $50 on supplies in addition to course tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity. Closed toed shoes are required. Long hair should be tied back.
