Graphic Design Essentials (online)

This class introduces individuals with little or no design background to the graphic design practice.

Course description

Students work both on and off the computer to complete assignments that explore basic 2D communication principles integrating color, shape, texture, typography, and photography to build a visual language. Essential skills in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator that support the task of each assignment are taught through weekly tutorials. Develop an understanding of the stages of the design process (research, ideation, sketching, etc.). Project outcomes include collages, patterns, posters, and a logo. Towards the end of the class, gain insights into the process of sequencing and presenting a digital portfolio of design work. / Students will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the course. / Expect the workload to be 8-10 hours per week, whether the course is being taken for credit or non-credit.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This online course is a combination of synchronous and asynchronous sessions. The course is project-based, with 2 to 3 deadlines per week. This course includes a weekly synchronous meeting using Google Meet on Mondays from 6:00–7:30 p.m. CST, for demonstrations and the opportunity to ask questions. The first class meeting via Google Meet will be March 3. This is the second week of the course in order to give students some time to get familiar with the format before the live session. Course meetings are recorded so that students who cannot attend can review on their own schedule. Asynchronous course activities may include readings; video demonstrations and tutorials; online discussions; projects; and critiques.
