Introduction to Adobe Illustrator (online)

Adobe Illustrator is one of the leading tools in logo creation, animation, and graphic design. Learn how to get started with Adobe Illustrator and work toward the creation of images and text with more sophisticated tools and techniques.

Course description

Learn how to make images and logos using the pen tools, complex shapes, advanced patterns and personalized text. Explore the differences between vector-based images and bitmaps; identify when and why Illustrator should be used for a particular project and prepare files and export high-resolution graphics for use in print, web applications, videos and animations. Through demonstrations and practice, apply newly learned techniques and approaches to a comprehensive project. / Students will have access to Adobe Creative Cloud software throughout the class. / This class is recommended before starting the Illustration Certificate.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Course meeting details

Course will be synchronous, meaning students will meet weekly at the same time via Google Meet. Class meetings will include lecture, demonstrations, discussions, exercises, critiques, and time to ask questions and share resources. This class will meet for 90 minutes then have a break, followed by 90 minutes of work time and the instructor’s office hours. Office hours are an opportunity for students to ask questions and receive feedback and guidance.

Prerequisites

Previous experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator are helpful, but not required.

Required materials

Supplies
Pen or pencil, notebook or sketchbook.

Software
Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD).

Hardware
A computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software, with internet access, a camera, and a microphone for class meetings and to capture and upload work.

Class resources

This class uses Adobe and Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system. Please see the link for more information.
