This course provides a technical and accessible approach to collage and zine-making by strictly focusing on lo-fi and analog methods of production. Course descriptionLearn about the rich and diverse history of both the collage and the zine as unique 20th century art forms. Explore different types of analog collage: frottage (graphite or wax rubbings) and cut-and-paste images from found sources and photocopies, while experimenting with layouts, sizes and folds. Zines are an incredibly useful medium for art and writing, given that they are easy to produce and reproduce quickly and cheaply. Part of their charm is in the medium's embrace of certain aesthetic limitations: the natural degradation of the photocopy, the physical process of cutting and pasting images together and then having disparate images merge together seamlessly in the final photocopy print. In creating these small and easily reproducible publications, the class focuses on narrative and other sequential strategies in devising content and layouts for these booklets. By the end of this course, each student will have created and completed several original zines to share with others. / Material fee of $6 included in course tuition.
