Painting with Gouache: Portraiture (in person)

Explore the art of creating compelling portraits using the vibrant and opaque medium of gouache.

Course description

Covering an array of different portrait styles and approaches, learn visual sighting, measuring, and proportion. Experiment with contour line painting, cubism, surrealism and symbolism in portraiture. The focus of each class session is to capture the likeness of a live model while exploring and experimenting with the medium of gouache. Gouache shares characteristics of watercolor, oil and acrylic paints, is highly pigmented, reworkable and dries quickly. / Materials fee of $58 is be included in tuition.

Open to students ages 16 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This class meets in person on MCAD’s campus.

Prerequisites

Previous drawing and/or painting experience is required. Previous watercolor or gouache painting experience is helpful, but not required. Note this is not an introduction to gouache class.

Required materials

Supplies for the first class

  • pen or pencil
  • notebook or sketchbook
  • gouache paint set (tubes or pans) MCAD Art Cellar sells Holbein Artist & Designer Gouache & Niji Artist Gouache
  • container for water
  • watercolor paint brush round (Number 4 round and other sizes)
  • watercolor paint brush flat
  • watercolor paper (22 x 30" 140lb)
  • paper (an assortment of different size, texture, & color paper)
  • HB pencils
  • erasers (kneadable and/or pink pearl)
  • paper towels
  • masking tape
  • pallet to mix colors on (plastic or disposable wax pallets)

Optional supplies

  • ruler or straightedge
  • color pencils
  • Xacto knife

Students should expect to spend up to an additional $200 on supplies in addition to course tuition.

What to wear
Clothes appropriate for messy creativity.

Class savings

Register on or before January 20 and save $25.
Register for more than one class at a time and receive $25 off each additional class (same-day registrations only).
