Photo Book Design (in person)

Photobooks are a wonderful way to share a personal photo project or a set of photographs from recent travels. This class focuses on the study, sequencing and construction of photo-based artist books.

Course description

Learn about the process of creating books from start to finish and discuss the importance of a thoughtful combination of structure, materials and content. Each week view a variety of dynamic books from the MCAD Library and the instructor's personal library. Bring a series of images to make into a photobook with class time spent editing, sequencing and choosing the best binding. Learn basic handmade bindings that work well with photographs, and have the opportunity to make printed books through the MCAD service bureau. This class is geared towards photographers, designers, or any type of image-maker, and suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to working professionals. Complete the course with one or more finished books. / Students will have access to Adobe Creative Suite software throughout the course. / Students will have access during class to a MCAD computer lab.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.

Class meeting details

This class meets in person on MCAD’s campus. Virtual office hours on Mondays 7:00-7:30 p.m.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and InDesign such as file editing and book layout is required if working digitally. The class will not include instruction in Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. A book layout template in Adobe InDesign will be shared for students interested in printing at MCAD.

Required materials

Supplies for the first day of class
Pen or pencil; notebook or sketchbook; laptop for notes if preferred.

A complete list of suggested materials will be discussed during the first class meeting. Students may spend up to $25 on class supplies in addition to tuition.

Software
Adobe Creative Cloud (provided by MCAD).

Hardware
If students access Adobe Creative Cloud at home, a computer capable of running Adobe Creative Cloud software, with internet access is required.

Class resource
This class uses Adobe Creative Cloud, Canvas, MCAD’s learning management system and Papercut, MCAD’s printing management system. Please see links for more information.
