Printmaking and the Figure (in person) | Minneapolis College of Art and Design

Printmaking and the Figure (in person)

This introductory course allows students to gain both observational drawing skills and experience in relief printmaking techniques. Create an image of a figure while observing a live model, using relief carving tools on linoleum blocks and learn to transform the image to multiple prints in the printmaking studio.

Course description

The first two hours of the class session is in the drawing studio with a live model. Students learn basic carving techniques and practice with carving tools on smaller blocks while observing the model in a series of short poses as a warm up. Students are encouraged to carve directly from observation, rather than using drawing tools, such as pencil or charcoal, on the blocks. The remaining time allows for more in depth carving while observing the model in one or two longer poses.

The last two hours of the class session takes place in the MCAD's printmaking studio to learn basic relief printing techniques and create multiple prints using the carved linoleum blocks created in the drawing studio. Students use the blocks and a printing press to produce beautiful black and white prints. Students are encouraged to share prints with other students for a print exchange.

The class presents an intriguing challenge for printmakers, people who draw, and any artist who wants to try something new and different. / Materials fee of $27 and Facility fee of $11 included in tuition. Please review the Printshop Facility Fees Supply List for more information.

Open to students ages 18 and above. Review complete policies, including class cancellation policies, before completing your registration.
