Alumni Feature / Laura Andrews '06

Written by kay heino

Over the winter break I was given the wonderful opportunity to connect with some past MFA alumni and see what they have been up to as of late. I would like to share the response from the wonderful Laura Andrews '06. I just would like to take a moment and say thank you for responding as soon as you did. But to the Q&A that was created between us.

kay:

Which year did you graduate and what brought you to MCAD for your MFA?

Laura:

I graduated in 2006, I chose MCAD because my family lives in Minnesota and I wanted to be near them, but in Minneapolis, a more urban area.

kay:

How did your creative practice change while you were at MCAD?

Laura:

MCAD and the mentorship program helped me professionalize my practice and made me more aware of all the aspects that go into making paintings - research, surface preparation, producing the work, getting feedback, writing about the work, exhibiting it. In addition, it helped me navigate selling my work.

kay:

Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the program?

Laura:

My favorite memories are working in the studio, late at night, listening to music as well as meeting with fellow grad students after Critique Seminar or Theory class to chew over whatever the discussion topic for class was that day.

kay:

What is next? Any new projects or life events that are in the pipeline?

Laura:

I am currently teaching at Minneapolis Community and Technical College as well as programming the James Wegner Gallery at Riverland Community College in Austin, MN where my partner teaches. I am busy finishing an install and preparing for another one in March.

kay:

Do you have any links you'd like us to share with the post?
