Image Alumni ’22 Degree Bachelor of Fine Arts Areas of Study Comic Art Current Career Freelance Artist Location Austin, Texas Describe the work you submitted for merits. I submitted an experimental search and find comic, a longer eighteen-page comic focused on computer virus-like androids and music, as well as some other short comics and illustration work I've done. What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make? This summer I'm making about fifteen more search and find comic illustrations that I plan on turning into a book. The search and find I submitted for this was really fun to make and I think the idea has a lot of potential, so I'm expanding on that. Why did you decide to come to MCAD? I knew for a fact that I wanted to focus on comic art, and MCAD had a comic art program. What really sold me on the school was how beautiful the campus was and the tight-knit community. The artists coming out of this school are really amazing and I wanted to be a part of that. Favorite thing about college life (so far)? I've loved studying with my friends after class. The campus inside and out is really pretty, and there are a ton of places me and my friends can sit down and work on comic homework. I love spending hours drawing in the library or comic studio. What's the best thing you've got from MCAD's free shelf? I grabbed this giant pink sheep squishy. It looks worn and old but it needed a new home. So now it's gonna live the rest of its life on my bookshelf. Anything you're obsessed with at the moment? Yeah, Rodney from Animal Crossing. He just looks so funny. I just bought the Amiibo cards for him, Hamlet, and Graham. I'm working on a hamster island. Also, this GIF of a monkey in a bathtub. I can't stop looking at it. Also got this video of this baby monkey and there's this funny song playing. It's always on my mind. I watch it a few times before bed. What inspires you? I'm really inspired by a lot of smaller cartoonists I find on Instagram. I love looking at art on there. I also have been really into Japanese packaging and kids cartoons. The colors and stylization of some of this stuff is just insane. Also, old computer graphics. Just everything. I love looking at junk. Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it! My favorite piece right now has got to be my search and find comic! I've talked about it a ton this interview but it was really a turning point in my recent work. The assignment was to create a non-linear comic, so I had the idea to create a search and find where if you looked for the items on the side of the page in order, you would also be able to follow a story of a couple characters in the scene meeting for the first time. It's just, like, a cat girl meeting a cat boy at a carnival. Classic stuff. Why I like it so much though is for all the stuff I drew in that didn't pertain to the story. I drew all of it the night before it was due with my friend in the library, and in that late-night dash to get it done I ended up adding some really dumb stuff that my awake brain would have probably vetoed. But that's why I like it. There's a million little stupid-looking babies just walking around unattended. Some are drinking Pepsi. I drew my friend and me beating up a penguin from Club Penguin. You don't get that kind of stuff when you think too hard about your work. What are you reading these days? I'm flipping between reading The Fellowship of the Ring and this book called Tubes by Andrew Blum. It's about the physical makeup of the internet. Really interesting stuff.
