Main Gallery

January 19–March 6, 2016

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 21, 6:00–8:00 p.m.

Following the reception will be a special performance by GRRRL PRTY!

For six weeks students at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design take over the college’s main gallery by voicing concerns, raising hackles, and inciting a bevy of other rambunctious activities.

Projects featured in the gallery space represent the work of a variety of students, including over fifty undergraduates who enrolled in the fall classes Gender, Art, and Society, Publication Design, and Site-Specific Print. The Guerrilla Girls, who were visiting artists on campus in October 2015, conducted workshops with these classes and encouraged students to focus on issues that were meaningful to them. In addition, an open call to MCAD students resulted in proposals that activate different areas in the main gallery. Participatory activities will allow all gallery visitors to take a stand, make a demand, or encourage action.

This exhibition is organized as part of the Guerrilla Girls Twin Cities Takeover. From January to March 2016 the Takeover will include over thirty arts and cultural organizations in Minneapolis/St. Paul and surrounding cities. From small non-profit art centers to major cultural institutions in the region, these partners will be highlighting gender and race inequalities, taking on stereotypes and hypocrisies, and promoting artistic expression by the often overlooked and underrepresented. Join the collective roar for change.
