Ojars Arvids Feldbergs was born on the 10th of October, 1947, in Riga, capital of Latvia, during the country’s occupation by the USSR. After completing lower secondary school, he studied at Riga’s vocational construction school from 1962 until 1966, when he fulfilled obligatory military service in the Soviet army. In 1970 he entered the sculpture department at the Latvian State Art Academy, graduating in 1976. Since 1972 he has participated in art exhibitions and symposia in many countries including Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Egypt, Israel, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, USA, Canada, Spain, England, Armenia and Finland. Feldbergs has chosen stone as his primary sculptural medium. He has developed his own conceptual method that is expressed by the formula – space-mass-consciousness. Through this triad he explores nature and its processes as well as central questions of human experience. Ojars Feldbergs will be brought to the Twin Cities in connection with the University of Minnesota.
