Maya Hlavacek is a writer and editor. She comes from a Midwestern family of readers and artists, and her grandfather was a painter, educated at the Instituto de Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Hlavacek received her MFA in creative writing (fiction) from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 2017, where she was a Truman Capote Fellow, a Teaching Writing Fellow, and recipient of the Maytag Award for Fiction. She has lectured on writing fiction at the Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, Arts Share Iowa, and the Loft Literary Center. Since 2012, she has lived and worked across the U.S., spending some years in New York City, San Francisco, Iowa City, and most recently, Minneapolis. She is currently at work on a novella.
