In 2017, after 30 years as an art director of product design in the supplementary educational product sector, for several companies, I was laid off. It was sudden. Unexpected. And as I started the search for a new job, I found that I didn't have the energy—or passion—to find yet another job in the industry that let me go. I had given it my all and it was a good ride, but I was ready for a change. Maybe the layoff was a blessing. Or a nudge. Or maybe, an opportunity. I decided it was all of those. So I asked myself, 'What ARE you passionate about?" Turns out it was the same as it was back in the 80's when I was just starting out—filmmaking. My circumstances back then lead me down a different path, but now I had the chance to start again. Did I have any professional experience in this field? No, not really. But I wanted it enough to adjust my lifestyle, find other means of income to pay my bills, take the entry-level jobs, networked, interned, and almost to THE DAY three years after making that decision, I got my first paying gig as an editor. Now a few years into it am I making movies? No. But I'm enjoying what I'm doing again, and can personally attest that with hard work, dedication, and focus, you CAN follow your passion and make it work. Even when you're 60.
