November 04, 2020 Paula McCartney Meet the artists of the 2020 MCAD Faculty Biennial Shift/Pivot is the first book by A Fine Mess Press, McCartney’s collaboration with Wisconsin artist, Jason Vaughn. Shift/Pivot records quiet moments of nature interacting with the interior and exterior of domestic spaces. Each side of the book unfolds out to 14"x24". I designed this structure to allow our work to dialog as the viewer progressively unfolds each side of the book. Fully open, multiple spreads are experienced at once. On one side, dried buds on bare branches in the backyard are abstracted by a flash, adding to the constellation of falling snow against the night sky. On the other, morning sun illuminates tree branches animated by the wind and projected through a window onto a kitchen wall, offering different versions of the same story.
