2024 Merit Scholarship Recipient: Bri Dorsey

Describe the work you submitted for merits.

I submitted a couple of animation exercises, an animatic, and gestures/character designs from my most recent classes.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I wasn't planning on going to art school, but COVID-19 hit when I was in high school and I discovered that I could make a living by doing what I love. Bringing characters to life! I applied to MCAD, received financial aid, and took that as an opportunity to follow my dreams.

What are your plans for your senior year? And beyond?

In my Senior year, I mainly want to focus on my Thesis, which I'm using as a way to explore a narrative I have. I also want to be more active in the Animation Club Server and do more collaborative work with friends. Once I graduate I want to work in the animation industry as a character animator/story artist (I'm interested in character design as well)! I want to live comfortably doing what I love.

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

I love the MCAD library!! I've never had so much access to art books and I often check out the same ones over and over. I'm going to miss it very much when I leave.

What inspires you?

Stories. I've always loved reading stories, making stories, and listening to stories. It was a large part of my childhood and still impacts me today. I think visual storytelling is very powerful.

Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!

I'm most proud of my Character Animation 2 Final. Although I didn't finish it, I learned so much about movement and weight from working on it that it still means a lot to me. I plan to finish it once the summer rolls around!

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment?

I'm currently obsessed with the band Koza Mostra and I'm watching a lot of D&D!

Do you work with background noise? I either listen to music or I have the Monterey Bay Moon Jelly Cam playing on my desktop!
