2025/26 Merit Scholarship Recipient: Louis Lynch

How/why did you choose your major?

Before entering MCAD I received an Assc. in Apparel Technologies, which made it possible to found a fashion brand. I chose MCAD and Product Design to develop ideation and processing skills for 3D objects that will allow me to transition into a lifestyle brand.

Describe the work you submitted for merits.

I submitted to MCAD a concise collection of garments and leather goods that showed the high level of craft and attention to detail. The items presented serve utilitarian purposes in an eccentric style. Paired with these items I presented the the 2D and 3D projects I've made while at MCAD that have pushed my capabilities in both a physical way, that forced me to work with unfamiliar materials, and in a interpersonal way as I create narrative.

Why did you decide to come to MCAD?

I came to MCAD to develop further as an artist.

What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make?

I am excited to explore materials and create useful objects for myself and clients.

Favorite thing about college life (so far)?

I love staying busy. It's been very enjoyable to have a constant direction guided by the knowledgable professors.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by utilitarian-driven design.

Do you have a favorite piece you've made? Describe it!

My favorite piece that I have made well at MCAD is my Doll House Nightstand. Standing at 2 feet tall this piece features a large storage space behind the facade of the house, and further compartments hidden within the roof.

Anything you're obsessed with at the moment?

I have been obsessing over different fabric mending techniques recently. Preserving a sentimental garment is so special to me and I hope to share the process with friends so that they too can keep garments in rotation longer.
