Alice Dodge Reviews Rachel Rose’s "Lake Valley" Installation at Burlington’s BCA Center

Alice Dodge '08, MFA spotlights Rachel Rose’s immersive video installation, Lake Valley, currently on display at the BCA Center through September 15 in her review for Seven Days.

Lake Valley, which premiered at the 2016 Venice Biennale, draws inspiration from 19th- and early 20th-century children's literature. It features a hybrid creature navigating a shifting landscape—from a familiar home to a lush, Henri Rousseau-style jungle. The installation employs traditional cel animation and a rich soundscape, creating a visually and emotionally engaging experience.

Dodge praises Rose’s ability to blend comfort with unease, capturing the essence of classic children's tales with a contemporary twist. The video’s dreamlike quality and thematic depth resonate particularly well with children, many of whom have returned to experience it multiple times.
