October 05, 2024 Image Drawing Lessons, a new play co-commissioned by Ma-Yi Theater Company and the Children’s Theatre Company, is set to preview on October 8, promising a heartfelt exploration of artistic identity and cultural heritage. Drawing Lessons combines live drawing performances with projected artwork by Minneapolis-based graphic novelist and instructor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Blue Delliquanti, offering audiences a unique blend of visual and theatrical storytelling. Set in Minneapolis during the 1995-1996 school year, the story follows eleven-year-old Kate, a budding artist on a journey of self-discovery through her mentorship with a comic strip artist and a deeper connection to her Korean roots via her great aunt. The play explores themes of cultural identity, mental health, and the dynamics of introversion versus extroversion, as Kate navigates her anxiety and societal expectations through art.
