Sci-Fi, Magick, Queer LA: Sexual Science and the Imagi-Nation, a book co-authored by Kelly Filreis ’11, has earned a spot on Hyperallergic's list of the 30 Best Art Books of 2024.

The catalog, beautifully designed with a maroon cloth cover and gold-stamped art, explores the intersection of LGBTQ+ history, sci-fi fandom, and occultism in mid-20th century Los Angeles. Rich with illustrations, early cosplay images, and archival materials from the ONE Archives, Sci-Fi, Magick, Queer LA offers readers a unique glimpse into the ways queer people in Los Angeles used sci-fi and occultism as means of resistance and escape during a time of societal repression.

The book serves as a companion piece to a groundbreaking exhibition about queer science fiction and occult culture in Los Angeles at the USC Fisher Museum of Art, which Filreis also helped curate.
