Holding an honorary doctorate from MCAD, the exhibition was curated by Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, (citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation), who passed January 24, 2025, the exhibition exemplifies her life pursuit and dedication to giving Native Americans of every nation a voice in the American art landscape. One of the most profound and renowned Native American artists of our time, she used humor in her work to examine the myths and reality of Native American’s lives in modern-day consumerist America. For Indigenous Identities: Here, Now, & Always, Smith spoke back and forth with the artists to help select the works they felt best represented them, giving them an agency not common amongst curators, who usually predetermine the work they want to be seen. The goal of the exhibit is to carve out a space in the contemporary art scene for Native American artists and allow them to reclaim their voices.
